From ADolescent to ADult

The Early years : It starts

My school years were carefree and nurtured. I won plenty of awards for varied subjects. I won subject awards for Psychology and Applied Art and was elected to the school Art Council. I taught drawing and painting to underprivileged children and won prizes for case studies and dramatic interpretations. Music was also one of my fortes, taking part in various inter and intra school competitions. I even performed in a group of selected students for the Chief Minister of New Delhi.

Nobody who knew me then could have known where I was headed. 2006 was when it all started. I was chosen as the class representative of my Level 1 class at the Lasalle College of the Arts Advertising Design class – the leader of people who were dealing with the same thing that I was.

Enabling the habit

Three periods were especially tough for me. The first came in 2007 when I completed a two month internship with Lowe Lintas (New Delhi, India) between May and July of ’07 working as an intern art director on various projects for Dabur, Nestle and LG. It was an environment that fuelled my ADdiction. Everyone else there was in a similar situation and so to me I was just fine.

Things got even worse when in December of ’08 I completed another internship at 24 incorporated, a small ad agency in the heart of Singapore. This time I interned in both art and copy, completing works for Duracell, Olay, Oral B, Acnes and Himalaya Herbals.

Then, having chosen my path as a copywriter, I succumbed once again to my habit, successfully applying for an internship at JWT Singapore, where work for clients as diverse as Pizza Hut, HSBC and Nokia had been keeping me busy for  the last few months until most recently, I earned a full-time job at Formul8 Singapore, coming full circle from intern art-director to full-time copywriter. I had been through it all, though my journey’s just beginning.

Turning Point

The turning point came when I finally made peace with myself. My ADdiction is my treatment, and Copywriting and Conceptualization are my 12 step programme. Like an alcoholic to an open bar, I hope to feed my ADdiction through this journal.

An average person at first glance…

malvika menon. copywriter. idea machine. daydreamer. pretty decent singer. crummy guitar player. reality TV addict. movie buff. self-proclaimed food critic. will read anything at least once.
